PGI

A PGI is a quality designation used in the European Union to protect and promote traditional agricultural and food products from a specific region. This designation implies that certain products, such as meats, cheeses, wines or other foods, have specific characteristics related to their geographical origin, production methods and quality.

For the standardization of these products, a series of community and national provisions appear, regulated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, among which the “Regulation (EC) No. 510/2006 of the Council, of March 20, 2006, stands out. , on the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin of agricultural and food products.

Products with a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) have some specific quality or reputation or other characteristic that can be attributed to a geographical origin and whose production, transformation or elaboration takes place in the delimited geographical area from which it also takes its name.

Geographical indications protect your product against any usurpation or imitation of the registered name and guarantee the true origin of the product for your consumers. The protection guarantees the consumer and all producers in the specific geographical area collective rights over the product, provided that certain requirements are met.

PROXIMITY

It is what is done directly by producers or groups of agricultural producers in favor of the final consumer, without the intervention of an intermediary.

Direct sales can be carried out on the farm itself, in farm shops of agricultural producer groups, in local markets, fairs and markets or in other places that are not permanent commercial establishments.

Direct sales can also be carried out at a distance, or on an itinerant basis in accordance with what is established by current regulations on internal trade.

In the case of direct sales, the accreditation and logo must be displayed in a visible and preferential place. In the case of manufactured products, the logo can be included on the labeling, without prejudice to the mandatory mentions established by current regulations on labeling.

ANIMAL WELFARE

The CertificationWelfair is an Independent Certificate managed by IRTA in collaboration with Neiker-Tecnaliabased on the European Welfare Quality project and the European AWIN® project, where systems have been developed to evaluate and control the quality of animal welfare on farms and slaughterhouses

It is this evaluation and control that allows both producers and slaughterhouse managers to know the state of well-being in their facilities and make continuous improvement through the certification program. In this way, good practices in respectful and sustainable animal welfare are guaranteed that result in the improvement of their results and that are, in addition, a guarantee for consumers that a series of standardized and consensual measures are applied at the European level that ensure the animal welfare throughout the production cycle.

Based on a sample of individuals from the farm or slaughterhouse, and taking into account previously defined and standardized criteria, as well as verifying compliance with current legislation, we analyze how the animals are actually doing, not only considering the conditions in which they live. that are housed or sacrificed.

Currently, IRTA and NEIKER continue to research and develop new animal welfare assessment models, also applicable to species not initially included in the Welfare Quality® project, as part of the global strategy for the development of more efficient, responsible and sustainable production systems.
