PGI

A PGI is a quality designation used in the European Union to protect and promote traditional agricultural and food products from a specific region. This designation implies that certain products, such as meats, cheeses, wines or other foods, have specific characteristics related to their geographical origin, production methods and quality.

For the standardization of these products, a series of community and national provisions appear, regulated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, among which the “Regulation (EC) No. 510/2006 of the Council, of March 20, 2006, stands out. , on the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin of agricultural and food products.

Products with a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) have some specific quality or reputation or other characteristic that can be attributed to a geographical origin and whose production, transformation or elaboration takes place in the delimited geographical area from which it also takes its name.

Geographical indications protect your product against any usurpation or imitation of the registered name and guarantee the true origin of the product for your consumers. The protection guarantees the consumer and all producers in the specific geographical area collective rights over the product, provided that certain requirements are met.
