The CertificationWelfair is an Independent Certificate managed by IRTA in collaboration with Neiker-Tecnaliabased on the European Welfare Quality project and the European AWIN® project, where systems have been developed to evaluate and control the quality of animal welfare on farms and slaughterhouses
It is this evaluation and control that allows both producers and slaughterhouse managers to know the state of well-being in their facilities and make continuous improvement through the certification program. In this way, good practices in respectful and sustainable animal welfare are guaranteed that result in the improvement of their results and that are, in addition, a guarantee for consumers that a series of standardized and consensual measures are applied at the European level that ensure the animal welfare throughout the production cycle.
Based on a sample of individuals from the farm or slaughterhouse, and taking into account previously defined and standardized criteria, as well as verifying compliance with current legislation, we analyze how the animals are actually doing, not only considering the conditions in which they live. that are housed or sacrificed.
Currently, IRTA and NEIKER continue to research and develop new animal welfare assessment models, also applicable to species not initially included in the Welfare Quality® project, as part of the global strategy for the development of more efficient, responsible and sustainable production systems.
